HEALTH AND FITNESS
Many people come to the world of fitness because they want to lose weight. Nothing wrong with this really. We now know that being over-weight is at the core of many of life's major ailments. Anything we can do to get rid of these unwanted pounds is a good thing. And less weight could translate into more health. Not bad! 

However, If Losing weight is your only goal and reason for being involved with fitness, you may come away from the experience disappointed. Goals are peculiar kinds of things. They have starting points and ending points. And sadly, many people walk away from their goals before they reach them or after they reach them. In the world of weight-loss and fitness either one can be devastating.

Diets don’t work! One of the reasons for this is they are so restrictive and so unpleasant that no one wants to stay on them for very long. Real weight loss and real weight management is about healthy choices. 

Healthy eating is not about weird fad diets. It’s about variety and control. When it comes to eating healthy, it’s not about depriving yourself of the things you want and enjoy. It’s all about eating more of the things that are healthy and less of the things that are not.

Portion control reigns supreme. You can have the things you want that are bad for you, as long as you limit the amount. You can have the carbs you crave as long as you don’t have a hubcap full of spaghetti.  
WE NEED TO MOVE FROM WEIGHT-LOSS
TO HEALTH AND FITNESS MANAGEMENT
The secret to being successful at weight-loss is a shift in focus. It's what we concentrate on that counts. Health and Fitness is a direction, not a destination. 

Like a hand held compass, when the needle is pointing north we are heading north. You might say our focus is north. When the needle is not pointing north, we are heading in some other direction and we have lost our focus. 

When it comes to weight-loss the needle on our compass needs to be heading towards health and fitness. Our focus needs to be on the activities that keep us heading in that direction. Fitness and Health doesn't start and stop. It's a compass, not a stop watch. 

We either engage in activities that make us healthy and fit or we don't. The successful person does not concentrate on losing pounds. They focus instead on the creation of activities that will make them healthy and fit. They then organize their life around these activities. 
I talk to many older people who believe it’s impossible to gain muscle after a certain age. They have heard all the stories about how we start losing muscle mass after the age of forty and sometimes younger. Because they believe there is nothing they can do about their muscles, they no longer exercise. 

Yet I know many older bodybuilders who are in their seventies and eighties who continue to work out, they continue to remain flexible and they continue to grow muscle mass. Because they believe they can do something about their health and fitness, that’s exactly what they do. And they get phenomenal results.

Yes it is true we do lose muscle as we age but the biggest reason for this is we stop using our muscles. In our society we are moving less and less and exercising less and less regardless of our age. As we grow older we move even less and practically never exercise. It’s not that we can’t gain strength and muscle as we age; it’s just that we stop exercising our muscles altogether. We don’t do any strength training or conditioning and what we don’t use we lose.

Gaining muscle mass is actually not that difficult when you exercise on a regular basis. The studies suggest we lose between six and eight percent of our muscle mass every decade after a certain age. On the surface and in the news this sounds horrible. But if you think about it, that’s less than one percent a year. If we work out just a little bit we can easily off set this. All’s we have to do is gain two percent in our muscle mass a year and we end up being ahead of the game. 

I like to think about it like this. Every time I drive my car I use up some gas. Just because my tank has less gas in it doesn’t mean I can’t stop and put more gas in the tank. Just because we lose some of our muscle mass after a certain age doesn’t mean we can’t off set this with a little exercise.
